There were 36 participants from the region (India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand, Qatar, Republic of Korea, and Republic of Kazakhstan) including organizer. Out of 36 there were 8 participants (NEPAN, Ageing Nepal, Senior Citizen\u2019s Welfare Association Nepal, Women for Human Rights, Free forum for Rights, Alzheimer\u2019s and Related Dementia Society Nepal and Console Mission) from Nepal where Ms. Usha Aryal Dahal, Executive Director represented the NEPAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Objectives\nof the workshop<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To strengthen our members\u2019 understanding of\nhuman rights and the positive impact that a new UN convention would have on\nolder people\u2019s everyday lives.<\/li><li>To equip our members with the knowledge and\nskills to successfully influence the OEWG process at the national (and\ninternational) level.<\/li><li>To nurture stronger collaborative links\nbetween our members across the Asia Pacific region, with a focus on building\nnational coalitions.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To meet above objectives discussions, group works and\npresentations were done on the following topics<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>13 November 2019 (First Day)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Facilitator: Susan Somers, Secretary General from The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Why human\nrights:<\/strong> This session explored what human rights are and why are they\nimportant for older people in this region. It has considered ageism as a\nspecific form of discrimination and examines how a human rights-based approach\nand a new convention can improve older people\u2019s everyday lives.<\/li><li><strong>Understanding\nthe UN process on older people\u2019s rights: &nbsp;<\/strong>This session focused on the UN\nOpen-ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWG), its mandate and history, the stages\nand progress of the process so far and its current status.<\/li><li><strong>GAROP and\ncivil society coordination in the open ended working group (OEWG): <\/strong>This session\nhas started with a brief review of GAROP\u2019s mandate, vision, mission and\nhistory. Also covered structure including the Secretariat and Steering Group\nand membership with a breakdown by region. GAROP is the only global civil\nsociety platform dedicated solely to the human rights of older people and work\ntowards a convention. Furthermore, the session looked at older people and civil\nsociety\u2019s opportunities to engage in the OEWG including securing accreditation\nand the need to strengthen older people\u2019s voices in the process and discussed\nimportant human rights processes at the UN level that are linked to the OEWG.\nTwo short presentations were done by Ms Ishwari Swar, Senior Citizen\u2019s Welfare\nAssociation Nepal \u2013 reflections on participation in the 10th OEWG session in\nNew York in April 2019 and Mr Zazan Farah, Ehsan, Qatar \u2013 reflections on\nparticipation in the 41st session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva in\nJuly 2019<\/li><li><strong>Mapping\ngovernment support for a UN convention in the region: <\/strong>This\nsession explored which Member States have supported a convention in the UN OEWG\nso far by region and particularly look at Asia Pacific States participation in\nthe OEWG session followed by a joint exercise, mapping States according to\nlevels of influence and interest to inform advocacy planning.<\/li><li><strong>Building\ngovernment support for a UN convention: <\/strong>This session covered the importance of\nyear-round advocacy at the national level, good practice examples, and how we\ncan build stronger political support from governments for a UN convention. Further\npresentation was done by Dr. Jacob Kattakayam, CGS from India on national\nadvocacy and influencing in India<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>14<sup>th<\/sup> November, 2019 (Second Day)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Facilitator: Prabhat Kiran Pradhan, Alzheimer\u2019s and Related Dementia Society Nepal (ARDS)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Working with\nNational Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs): <\/strong>This session looked at the role of\nNHRIs, their participation in the OEWG process, and how NGOs can engage\nconstructively with them in national advocacy around older people\u2019s human\nrights. Followed the presentation which was done by Cho Hyunse, HelpAge Korea\nabout the work of NHRIs and working with the National Human Rights Commission\nof Korea. <\/li><li><strong>Older\npeople\u2019s rights in the OEWG-content and substance: <\/strong>&nbsp;Presentation by: Ellen Graham, GAROP\nSecretariat: This session involved an introduction and update about the OEWG\u2019s\ncurrent working methodology, including the online consultations and subsequent\nworking documents followed by the debates in New York. The session also covered\nterminology (\u2018substantive\u2019 and \u2018normative\u2019) and the four OEWG focus areas for\nthe 11th session. <\/li><li><strong>Parallel\nsessions on focus areas of older people\u2019s rights<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This session discussed about the substance of the focus areas for\nthe UN consultation and the use of human rights-based language:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Education,\ntraining, lifelong learning, capacity building: <\/strong>discussion\nof the paper produced by the GAROP Technical Group<ul><li><strong>Social\nprotection and social security (including social protection floors): <\/strong>discussion\nof the paper produced by the GAROP Technical Group<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Access to\njustice: &nbsp;<\/strong>discussion\nof UN Guiding Questions<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Right to\nwork and access to the labour market: <\/strong>discussion of UN Guiding Questions<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>National advocacy planning<\/strong>: Presentation done by: Ferdoushi Begum, RIC on national coalition work in Bangladesh: This session talked about the case study about NGOs working together at national level in Bangladesh and enabled members to discuss and plan their national advocacy approaches up to April 2020 (and possibly beyond). <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Growing\nour movement and increasing our impact: <\/strong>Session led by Tanvi Patel, HelpAge\nInternational, this session considered how we can grow our movement and further\nresource our work and joint activities, including fundraising and in-kind\nsupport from members.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The global alliance for the rights of older people (GAROP) Asia Pacific member\u2019s regional workshop was held in Apollo Dimora Hotel, Trivandrum, Kerala, India from 13-14th November 2019.
